The first failure boundary is CANopen terminal wiring. Power supply, CAN low, CAN high, CAN ground, housing ground, Bus IN, Bus OUT, shield bonding, and cable-gland strain relief must be checked before startup. If CAN H/L is reversed, the baud rate is different, the node address is duplicated, or the 121 Ω termination is enabled at the wrong bus position, communication may appear present but process data can fail.

This replacement fails when the CANopen node is detected, but the PLC reads no valid or incorrect multiturn position because terminal wiring, address setting, baud rate, termination, or DS406 profile configuration does not match the original encoder. That is a network and wiring failure, not a sensing failure.

The second boundary is 13/12-bit parameter agreement. A 13-bit singleturn and 12-bit multiturn structure must not be mixed with 12/12, 12/16, or 14/16 settings unless the PLC project is changed.
