When replacing CVM78E-011K2AYBI-1216, the EncoderWorks custom compatible replacement should first control CANopen node setup, K2 axial cable routing, and 28-bit position mapping. This model should not be treated like the radial cable version. The interface may be the same, but axial cable exit, 2 m cable length, special option coding, and clamping-flange mechanics create a different replacement boundary.

The first failure boundary is CANopen setup. Node address, baud rate, CAN H / CAN L wiring, CAN ground, and the 121 Ω termination state must match the original bus. If the node address is duplicated, the baud rate differs from the master, or termination is enabled at the wrong position, the encoder may power up but fail to return stable process data.

This replacement fails when the CANopen node is detected, but the PLC reads no valid or incorrect multiturn value because address, baud rate, CAN H/L wiring, termination, or DS406 profile settings do not match the original encoder. That is a network-configuration failure, not a sensing failure.

The second boundary is parameter agreement. A 16-bit singleturn and 12-bit multiturn structure must match the PLC project. Preset value, counting direction, operating mode, limit switches, cam functions, and overall resolution should be copied before startup. The “Y” option segment should also be checked against the original label or drawing before production approval.

Mechanically, the Ø10 mm solid clamping shaft requires coupling alignment, not hollow-shaft seating. Axial cable exit needs rear clearance so cable bend stress does not disturb shielding, sealing, or shaft alignment.

The replacement decision should first confirm explosion-proof requirement, Inox housing, Ø10 mm clamping-flange geometry, K2 axial cable routing, option-code requirement, CANopen DS301 / DS406 compatibility, 16-bit singleturn and 12-bit multiturn mapping, node address, baud rate, 121 Ω termination, CAN H/L wiring, preset value, counting direction, shield grounding, cable clearance, and coupling load.
