The ASS58N-F3AAAR0GN-0016 is an SSI singleturn absolute encoder configuration with Gray code, 16-bit singleturn resolution, 4.5–30 VDC supply, aluminum housing execution, Ø15 mm x 30 mm recessed hollow shaft, 12-pin M23 connector, and radial exit. It should be handled as singleturn angle feedback, not as a multiturn encoder.

The first failure boundary is SSI connector accuracy. Clock+ / Clock- and Data+ / Data- must remain true RS422 differential pairs. If the M23 pin assignment is copied incorrectly, reserved pins are used, or the PLC expects binary code or a shorter word length, the SSI frame can be stable while the decoded angle is wrong.

This replacement fails when SSI communication is present, but the PLC reads the wrong singleturn position because M23 pin mapping, Gray decoding, 16-bit word length, PRESET 1 input, or V/R direction state does not match the original encoder. That is a signal-chain and parameter failure, not simply a sensing failure.

The second boundary is Ø15 mm recessed-shaft installation. The shaft is not solid and not a simple through bore. The machine shaft must enter within the 15–30 mm insertion range, while the torque rest prevents housing rotation without radial, axial, or angular preload.
