The first failure boundary is edge loss. A slow manual rotation test may show clean A/B/0 signals, while production speed causes missed counts because the counter input cannot preserve every transition. Push-pull output does not compensate for weak shielding, long cable runs, or aggressive input filters.

This replacement fails when A/B/0 signals are visible, but the controller loses counts because 4000 PPR, shaft speed, push-pull input threshold, or input filtering exceeds the real 100 kHz signal margin. That is a signal-chain failure, not simply an encoder failure.
