597820-03 should not be replaced only by matching the 3600 PPR value; EncoderWorks treats it as a custom compatible incremental encoder solution where RS422 receiver compatibility, M12 8-pin pinout, S00/S90/Sref inverted-channel mapping, Ø10 mm partial-flat shaft fit, and 61-type clamping-flange geometry must be confirmed together. This replacement fails when the controller receives pulse activity but the RS422 channel assignment, reference signal, receiver threshold, connector wiring, or shaft alignment does not reproduce the original encoder behavior.

The 597820-03 is a ruggedized solid-shaft incremental encoder configuration with 3600 PPR resolution, 9–30 VDC supply, RS422 output signal, M12 8-pin radial connector, Ø10 mm shaft with partial flat, clamping flange, and six output channels: S00, inverted S00, S90, inverted S90, Sref, and inverted Sref. It should be treated as a high-resolution incremental feedback device, not as an absolute encoder.

The first failure boundary is differential signal mapping. S00/S00, S90/S90, and Sref/Sref\ must remain paired correctly at the controller input. If the M12 connector pinout is copied incorrectly, if the reference channel is not accepted, or if the controller expects a different electrical format, the machine may rotate normally while direction recognition, speed feedback, or homing repeatability becomes unstable.

This replacement fails when incremental signals are present, but the controller loses counts or reads the wrong direction because RS422 output behavior, 3600 PPR scaling, M12 8-pin wiring, inverted-channel mapping, reference-signal handling, or input frequency margin does not match the original encoder.

The second boundary is ruggedized shaft installation. The Ø10 mm partial-flat shaft, 61-type clamping flange, radial connector clearance, shaft load, vibration resistance, shock resistance, IP67 housing protection, IP66 shaft-inlet protection, shield grounding, and cable routing must be checked together. Shaft preload or connector cable strain should not be used to compensate for coupling or mounting error.
